Independence Day 2026 Guide

About Independence Day

Independence Day on July 4th is the United States' national holiday, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 — the moment thirteen American colonies formally declared their separation from British rule. It is one of the most patriotically charged holidays in the country, celebrated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, concerts, and community gatherings from coast to coast. The Statue of Liberty, flags, and red-white-and-blue decorations are everywhere, and the air fills with the sound and light of some of the most spectacular fireworks displays in the world. It is also a major family holiday and marks the heart of the American summer.

History & Origins

The Second Continental Congress voted for independence on July 2, 1776, but it was the formal adoption of Jefferson's declaration on July 4th that became the celebrated date. John Adams predicted the date would be commemorated with fireworks and festivities — a prediction that proved entirely accurate. The first organized July 4th celebrations took place in 1777 in Philadelphia. Fireworks have been central to the celebration since that first year, and the day became a federal holiday in 1870.
